Customer Review

I've been using Nike+ for 6 years now, using iPod nano's. I bought this watch about 6 months ago for training for a marathon, since the form factor looked more convenient. So far I like it with some reservations.

The complaints about the GPS are understandable if you realize the limitations of GPS and the fact that the watch only talks via USB. The watch uses A-GPS (assisted GPS) information to help locate GPS satellites quickly, but this data is only valid for a few days. As a result you need to plug in the watch to sync the A-GPS data within a day before you run. Otherwise, it will take longer to get a lock on the GPS satellites positions - sometimes significantly longer. When used with a shoe pod, you can run before the sync occurs using quickstart, but you won't have any position information about your starting point. FYI: Smartphones use A-GPS too - they automatically download the latest data when starting the applicable application.

The software has matured over the last year, though I'm annoyed that the Windows version has persistent issues updating without end-tasking the Nike+ daemon process first (using Windows 7). Mac OSX has never had this issue. The Nike+Run website was revamped in June and the new interface is significantly better now. The speed is improved and there are more options for storing information about each run.

The Nike+Connect software has a number of options for the watch. I would highly recommend turning off the "Auto Loop" for stats, and selecting as few options as you really need. I use Speed for the stat loop, and distance for the favorite stat (the larger numbers) so I can quickly see where I am and regulate. I often run with the Heart Rate Strap, which is good to track whether you're pushing yourself too hard. The Nike+Run website shows the stats together with your run plus altitude details, which is awesome.

Downsides are that it's bulky (and the heart rate strap is too) and I've got a few scratches on the screen as a result. But compared to using an iPod or phone, it is way more convenient to use. Unlike the iPod I've never lost run data due to running out of battery power. The new lower price helped sway me to get one. ....Nike+ SportWatch GPS WM0069-002
